Should you be using a bar code scanner? Maybe NOT!

Less than 10% of our customers use bar code scanners.

You may want to consider using bar code scanners if:

  • If the items you sell are not unique one-of-a-kind and can easily be re-stocked
  • If a large percentage of the items sold are in-house or the mall’s inventory
  • Most of your dealers are willing and able to provide stock lists on pre-defined Excel spreadsheets
  • You prefer to apply computer printed labels vs hand-written
  • You would like to improve accuracy by avoiding bad hand writing and entering the wrong price
  • You would like to save a lot of time counting your own inventory using the bar code scanner
  • If you are a Boutique, Furniture or Home Furnishings store
  • A large majority of your dealers are computer savvy and want to computerize their inventory
  • If You do a large volume of business and scanning MAY help speed up the check-out process
  • AMAS has several programs & reports that aide in the annual Inventory count and reconciliation.

Reasons that you should NOT use bar code scanners:

  • If most of your sales are from dealers with unique one-of-a-kind items
  • If you are an Antique Mall – You are probably not a good candidate for bar coding
  • If you do not want or care to use bar code scanners
  • If most of your dealers will not cooperate with entering inventory
  • You or dealers are not willing to place barcode labels on merchandise
  • You are not likely to be able to label at least 40% to 60% of the items that actually sell
  • The mall MUST print labels for all of the dealers.
  • If You do a low volume of business, then bar code scanning may not realize any time savings for your business

Keep in mind that most of the efficiency will be gained from having items in inventory as opposed to having to also enter the Description and Price. You are not in the business of tracking and maintaining your dealers inventory levels, therefore you should not be entering their costs or quantities on-hand.

Notice: We only provide support for the bar code scanners that we sell. While there is chance that 3rd party scanners may work with AMAS, we will limit covered support to the scanners that we provide to you.
