How does the Star TSP100 Receipt printer save you money?
Almost any thermal receipt printer will save you money compared to printing invoices using laser or inkjet printers, however the TSP100 ECO model has two unique features that can definitely save you a few bucks:
- The TSP100ECO electronics has been designed with an advanced power management circuitry which allows any user to reduce his printer current consumption by up to 75% compared to standard Star printers.
- The TSP100ECO has two paper reduction settings that allow you reduce your reduce your receipt by 25% or 50%. My opinion is that the 25% reduction is barely noticeable.
But the really big savings are derived from the difference in the operating costs and supplies.
Once you have purchased your thermal receipt printer, your only expense (for a very long time) is receipt paper.
In addition to paper:
- Dot matrix receipt printers require new ribbons – frequently.
- Laser printers require ink, drums and maintenance expenses. Low cost laser printers are limited to 2,000+ pages/month
- Inkjet printers require expensive ink cartridges – very frequently. Most inkjet printers are limited to 1,000+ pages/month

Other things to consider:
- Inkjet printers, in general, are too slow and too expensive.
- All-In-One printers can be very cheap, but ink can be very expensive.
- I have had very good luck with some Brother inkjet All-In-Ones using very inexpensive 3rd party ink from Amazon or eBay.
- In the past I had not-so-good luck with Canon, Kodak and HP inkjet printers when using 3rd party compatible ink.
